What happened to Contra Reboot, and why was it cancelled?

Out of all the posts I've done here over the years, hardly one or two since I first started this news blog back in summer of 2008 have been about any Contra game. Now why is that? Contra has been one paticular series that Konami games development has seemed to not put a lot of focus on for a while. There was one glimmer of hope that we all had back in 2011 at the E3 show, when Konami teased a short trailer about Contra Reboot, except the only thing shown in it was a flaming C. Yeah, that's right, a freaking C on fire. Look at the video below, it only lasts about 40 seconds. I stumbled upon an article about this issue from the source page at Kotaku recently and had to bring it to your attention, because a lot of people want to know what in the heck happened to the Contra series.

Nobody really knows, Konami has had a lot of focus on Metal Gear, Silent Hill, the new PES game and so fourth, so maybe it was financial issues, or just a change of heart. Yager was supposed to originally be the brains behind it, but that went down the tubes likely because of other projects involved. There is however a possible happy ending to this. Dave Cox of Mercury Steam, the guys behind the Lords of Shadow games and Mirror of Fate has expressed a desire to bring the Contra series back to life. If that's the case, after seeing what he did with the Castlevania series, one can only wonder what they can do with a dead Contra.

This is all that remains of Contra,  a "C" on fire.
