In These Games, Death Is Forever, and That’s Awesome

Thứ Bảy, 29 tháng 6, 2013 | 1nhận xét

“Continue?”
Nearly anyone who has played a videogame has seen that word appear on the screen after their character “dies.” We know that death is just temporary, that another life is just a magic mushroom away. But as games become more and more realistic, some designers are saying this relic from the arcade era has overstayed its welcome.
Tens of millions of dollars and thousands of hours of labor are spent to enhance the war-like realism of games like Call of Duty: Black Ops II through lifelike graphics and weaponry that feels true-to-life.
But it’s hard to call a war game “realistic” when the soldiers magically resurrect after being shot in the head.
Jake Solomon, lead designer of the strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown, believes that if death in games is to have any meaning, it has to be as irrevocable as the real thing.
“Permanent death brings real consequences to the games we play,” said Solomon in an e-mail. “It evokes dread and a real sense of loss in players, because it’s something that they don’t want and they can’t undo once it has happened.”
In XCOM the player controls a squad of powerful soldiers that they train up throughout the game. If a soldier dies in battle, he or she is gone forever. Even though XCOM involves a fantastical sci-fi alien invasion scenario, the fear of losing a valuable character is vastly more thrilling than any contemporary war game in which death has no repercussions.
“It’s authentic,” Solomon said. “It’s real. Those emotions are real. The loss is real. The challenge that arises out of that loss is real. In some way, that makes the game real.”
“Permadeath” has been growing in popularity among game designers in recent years. Although it can take different forms depending on which game you’re playing, the message is always the same: Mistakes have consequences.
Some games feature extra modes in which the player can only die once before being forced to restart the game (Diablo 3Dead Space 2Minecraft). In other games, permadeath is the only way: If a player dies, he starts over with a new character that can attempt to retrieve their previous avatar’s valuable equipment from the spot they died, which tends to be a pretty scary place (DayZZombiUDark Souls.) There was even an experimental iPhone game called One Single Life that could never be played again after the first time the player died.
Before the advent of memory cards and hard drives that allowed players to save and restart games in progress, all death in games was permanent. You had three Pac-Men, and once they were gone, there was no other choice but to start over. When players gained the ability to put a checkpoint at the beginning of a level and try it over and over until they succeeded, designers had to start making the games more complicated, usually with elaborate storylines that were meant to be played through, not restarted over and over.
The downside of strong narratives, Solomon said, is that they’re usually a clue to players that the game’s hero will never be in mortal danger.
“If you have a hero character at the heart of your narrative, and you have 10 hours of story designed around that character, there is no conceivable way for that character to die,” said Solomon. “Unfortunately, the player knows that too. And so they know that the environment that you’ve created is not authentic. … They know they’re not going to die. The whole point of the experience is to prop the player up until the final cutscene plays.”
The games today that use permadeath as a feature are something of a hybrid of old and new. They have more storyline than Pac-Man but the emphasis is not on a heavily scripted Hollywood-style narrative. Rather, the game’s fictional worlds set the scene, establish a strong sense of place, but give the players more leeway to imagine their own personal stories.
“My desire was to tap into real human emotions,” said Dean Hall, designer of DayZ, a zombie apocalypse-themed modification for a PC shooter game called ARMA 2.
Hall said in an e-mail that permadeath makes players use “emotional reasoning,” rather than logic, to sort out problems. Players start to think with their hearts. They think about all the time they’ve invested to get where they are, and whether or not they’re willing to risk everything when they roll the dice.
In DayZ, once your character dies, that’s it — you have to start over again with a new survivor. Other players can kill you just as easily as the zombies can. This has led to bizarre scenarios, such as players reporting that they were taken hostage and forced to run missions for other players at gunpoint.
It’s unlikely we’ll see permadeath become common in big-budget games, said Hall.
“Videogame budgets are increasingly more expensive for the big studios; they can no longer afford failure, and need to guarantee they can ship at least [500,000] products in order to cover costs,” said Hall. “Permadeath and the aspects that come with it are very risky for your product.” Some players might like the challenges, but others might get very upset that they aren’t allowed to fail without consequence. If the latter group is larger, that would result in major lost sales.
Because of this, Solomon said that right now the industry’s focus is still on narrative games like Haloand Gears of War, so big-budget permadeath games are unlikely to become widespread in the short term. However, the growing popularity of permadeath over the past couple of years gives him hope for the future.
“I do believe that permanent death and real consequences are going to find their way into the toolbox of more game designers going forward,” Solomon said. “And that’s nothing but good news for all of us.”

Top-Grossing or Not, XCOM Isn’t the Future of iOS Games

| 0 nhận xét

Last week, 2K Games did something unusual.
It re-released the critically acclaimed PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game XCOM: Enemy Unknownon iOS. Against all conventional wisdom, it’s charging $19.99 for the game — much more expensive than your average iOS game.
XCOM for iPhone and iPad is many things. It’s a big-budget, modern mobile game at a relatively premium price point. It’s also a port to be proud of. If you’re an iPad owner and a strategy game fan, it’s one of the best games you can buy.
But above all else XCOM is the exception, not the rule.
This is an excellent port. The interface for the humans-versus-aliens turn-based strategy game has been redesigned from the ground up to work smoothly with touch, and it shows. Once you’ve memorized some of the trickier gestures, playing the game feels totally natural.
It’s not the best version of the game: Touch controls still just aren’t as quick or intuitive as a keyboard-and-mouse setup. And although this should probably go without saying, the game does look significantly better on PC and consoles. Even on a new iPad with a Retina display, XCOM looks roughly like a PlayStation 2 game.
Re-releasing XCOM for iOS was both a bold and sensible move. Even at its $20 price point, the game has managed to crack both the Top Paid and Top Grossing charts on the App Store, which means that it’s pulling in a great deal of money.
That doesn’t, however, mean that this is the beginning of the rise of $20 tablet games. Before 2K Games decided to bring XCOM to Apple devices, the game had long ago established itself on other platforms as both a commercial and critical success. The publisher knew it could safely sell the game for tablets at a premium price point because it already a proven hit.
XCOM already had a perfect combination of tablet-friendly gameplay and high popularity. This is not a situation that publishers of games often find themselves in.
There’s also an infrastructure problem facing other publishers of big games on mobile devices. Once installed, XCOM takes up 3.2 GB. If you’ve got a 16 GB or even 32 GB tablet, that’s a serious chunk of storage.
I don’t download music, movies or books to my iPad — I use Spotify, Netflix and a Kindle Paperwhite instead. But despite this, I’m down to just 1 GB of space left on my 16 GB iPad for all the games on there.
If even one more publisher decides to release a high-quality iOS port of a successful PC or console game, I’m going to have to ditch that XCOM install.
You will see a couple of other publishers use the success of the iOS version of XCOM as a justification for ports of their own titles. Future games from XCOM‘s developer Firaxis will almost certainly be designed from the beginning with the iPad in mind.
But, at least in the foreseeable future, these big releases will be few and far between. Free-to-play games about clashes of clans and crushings of candy are still the most successful types of titles on touchscreen devices, and that’s not changing soon.

Legends of Dawn Complete Full Version Game

Thứ Sáu, 28 tháng 6, 2013 | 0 nhận xét

Game Information :

Fresh out of the lair of Dreamatrix Game Studios, Legends of Dawn
invites players to the brutal northerly reaches of Narr. Survival
depends on you, your magic and your sword.
What sets Legends of Dawn apart, is the freedom of play expressed in
several key attributes that are rarely seen in typical RPG genres. We
have poured our passion and creativity into taking you on an
enthralling ride away from wearisome reality, by providing you with
the choice to be whatever your heart desires, in Legends of Dawn.

Of course, the choices you make during game play does not prevent you
from trying something else later, or simultaneously if you wish. You
could combine the sword and the magic, be a powerful crafter or
anything else. Legends of Dawn liberates from class restrictions
unlike real life. Class, race and differences exist within the game
but after choosing your own race and gender, all else can be altered
without restarting the game.

Another quality that makes Legends of Dawn interesting, is the freedom
of direction and movement. Most games force a player to follow the main
storyline and forbid any deviation, or significant veering off the set
course. Legends of Dawn is more sympathetic to your playing needs. You
are free to wander wherever tickles your fancy within the continent,
without limitations, under one condition. Stay alive. We have been
careful to ensure that the quests only suggest, rather than impose
direction of movement. Your journey is in your hands alone.

Features :

In addition to all those remarkable features already mentioned, you
are bound to notice another cool thing about Legends of Dawn. The
absence of loading screen. It would have been so much easier to create
a game that would constantly force you to wait before the screen while
new contents load, but Dreamatrix is aware that your time is too
valuable to waste. We put our heads together and created our very own
engine that discreetly streams content in the background, in real time.
You are free to enter houses, caves, dungeons, temples, new regions and
so much more, without those pesky loading screens interrupting your
playing pleasure.

In order to provide you with such blissful range of possibilities,
we had to create a rather large world called Narr. The world of Narr
in Legends of Dawn, spans across continents through stunning
picturesque landscape that stimulates the mind. There are magical
regions where the mountains and hills defy gravity, buoyant as
balloons. We have also created countless dungeons awaiting for you
to discover what mysteries lie within their cold depths, as well as
camps, impressive docks and grim fortresses that bear silent witness
to battles. Mausoleums and cemeteries also await your exploration.
The hikes over unforgiving mountains and canyons are sure to thrill
the most ardent explorer. Graceful flying islands and mystical swamps
instil a sense of awe that could nudge you to cross the threshold of
the serene temples and shrines to pay your respects to the gods of
the land. With so much more on offer than is mentioned here, there is
no reason why Legends of Dawn should not become your favourite RPG.

Leisure Suit Larry Full Version PC Game

| 0 nhận xét

Game Information :

Leisure Suit Larry is one of the most iconic characters in the history of
computer gaming

The first game in the series, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge
Lizards, was published
in 1987 and helped build the Sierra On-Line dynasty. Featured in a score
of original software titles since then (not counting numerous anthologies
and cameo appearances), the series' hero, Larry Laffer, is a bumbling,
persistent everyman who just wants to be loved. Is that so wrong

From original designer Al Lowe (designer of all of Larry's classic
adventures) and writer Josh
Mandel, Replay Games is remaking the landmark first game for a new
generation. Expanded
and enhanced in every detail and ready for both mobile devices and PCs
Leisure
Suit Larry: Reloaded is being reborn for the players who might've seen
their parents (or
grandparents) playing Larry behind closed doors

Features :

Expanded Content - Who says a remake has to just be the same game with
new graphics? Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded enters the 21st century and
brings with it expanded puzzles, locations, women, humor, and gameplay
Modern, Hand-Drawn Graphics - Larry was great in big fat pixels 25 years
ago, but this is the age of the retina display. Leisure Suit Larry
Reloaded has gorgeous hi-res, hand-drawn art, and animation to show off
his irresistible face and the stunning women he meets
It wouldn't be Leisure Suit Larry without the humor - Larry is the
ultimate Casanova wannabe, but his "flirting" rarely goes as planned
Along with rejections, fans will laugh at thousands of hilarious
responses while they explore everything on screen. Non-mobile players
will hear professional voice over actors
A Symphony for the Ears - Gamers will hear an all-new Vegas-style
musical score from Grammy-nominated, BAFTA-winning composer Austin
Wintory. The soundtrack features all authentic instrumentation and Al
Lowe guest-starring on the sax
Naughty, but Nice - Larry is a man on the make, and the game drips with
innuendos, flirts with perversity, and oozes sexuality. But Larry has
always been about comedy, and never been explicit. Leisure Suit Larry
Reloaded retains that standard. There's no full-frontal nudity, no
four-letter words, and no on-screen sex

NOTE: If you can't answer Larry's questions, you are not old enough, go play LEGO
