What can we expect from the future of the Castlevania series and its current progression?

There is a lot of heat that's been generated over the recent Castlevania game titles like Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2 as of late. One of the things that started it all, was the transition of Castlevania into the 3D universe. When Lament of Innocence was released, it demonstrated that a 3D Castlevania could be done, but there are those out there that say Castlevania has lost its traditional game play elements. If you go back in time to 1997 and take a good look at Symphony of the Night, you can see why some have nicknamed it "MetroidVania", due to its similarities with Metroid. But that's probably where it shines the brightest as it's become an expectation with a large part of the fan base. When Lords of Shadow came out, it also showed that a 3D universe could be thrown into the mix and be a success in the process. The new problem that seemed to emerge however was the straightforward linear game play that sort of turned some others off from the series. That's one problem that vows to be fixed this time around, as Dave Cox, a producer for Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2 has made some statements in regards to this issue.

"Some people liked what we did [with Lords of Shadow], and a lot of people didn't like what we did, so I think this time it's a bit easier because people kind of know what to expect. I think we tried, particularly with Mirror of Fate, to meet some of those detractors a little bit further and meet their demands. When we were designing Mirror of Fate, exploration was much higher up on the list of things we wanted to achieve in terms of the final product. We don't want people who bought Lords of Shadow to suddenly get something different. We weren't sure if [Lords of Shadow] was going to be successful or not. We didn't know if the game was going to be popular, so we said, 'Let's make a handheld game; you don't need much money.' We could do something small in order to carry on the series if necessary"

So what we've seen so far is very promising, and there seems to be a deep rooted effort to try to please the split fan base of the Castlevania game series in order to win over at least most of them. This will also mark the first time in history that a 3D Castlevania game has been done for a hand held game system. The fact that Lords of Shadow 2 will also focus on a non linear game play system this time around is also another welcome bonus I'm personally glad to see being implemented for once. By the way, let's take a trip back in time and take another look at Symphony of the Night below.
