This all could be academic, but it is a bit fascinating and somewhat interesting. According to the official Wikipedia page for Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, the storyline takes place in the 1990s, and the world is suffering from an oil shortage. A Czech scientist comes to the rescue by creating a special type of algae that's bursting with hydrocarbons and can be used to make oil, both cheap and inexpensively. He is soon captured and held hostage by those who want to dominate the world by controlling its own oil supply. Solid Snake is then taken out of retirement and sent to recover the scientist, among other stealth operations. What exactly is this process of algae to oil production?
